Supported by HH Shaikha Moza bint Hamad Fund, King Hamad University Hospital Performs Cochlear Implant Surgery for Infant Girl

As part of the ongoing cooperation between AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation and the Royal Medical Services – King Hamad University Hospital, a medical team at the hospital successfully performed a cochlear implant operation for a girl aged one year and ten months. This is the fifth cochlear implant surgery carried out for children with hearing impairments under the cooperation between the two sides.

The patient was diagnosed through the early hearing screening programme, which revealed severe congenital deafness in both ears. After the report was presented to those in charge of the Fund of Her Highness Shaikha Moza bint Hamad Al Khalifa, approval was granted to cover the cost of the child's treatment through a cochlear implant. The operation was performed successfully at King Hamad University Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Omar Sabra, Consultant of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery, and his assisting medical team.

Brigadier Shaikh Fahad bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Acting Commander of the Royal Medical Services, affirmed that the fruitful cooperation between the Royal Medical Services and AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation serves to strengthen community partnership and humanitarian values and to unify efforts across sectors, which has a positive impact on the lives of patients in general, and in particular on the rehabilitation of many patients suffering from deafness, enabling them to lead a normal life.

For her part, Her Highness Shaikha Zain bint Khalid Al Khalifa, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation, expressed her delight at the success of the operation, wishing the child continued health and wellbeing.

Her Highness affirmed that the Fund of Her Highness Shaikha Moza bint Hamad Al Khalifa, which is managed by AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation, is committed to continuing to activate community partnership and to consistently entrenching positive values, supporting members of the community and encouraging humanitarian and charitable initiatives.

In addition to cochlear implant operations, the Fund has undertaken several initiatives in the field of healthcare, having covered the cost of providing 36 insulin pumps for children with diabetes in 2014 in cooperation with the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital. The Fund also equipped the Her Highness Shaikha Moza bint Hamad Al Khalifa Unit for the treatment and surgery of paediatric heart diseases at the Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa Specialist Cardiac Centre in Awali, in addition to providing a number of university scholarships.

It is worth noting that the Fund of Her Highness Shaikha Moza bint Hamad Al Khalifa was established in 2011 under the generous directives of the daughters of the late Her Highness Shaikha Moza bint Hamad Al Khalifa, may God rest her soul, and is managed entirely by AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation. The Fund aims to activate charitable and humanitarian initiatives that serve members of the local community.
